Shifting with Yoga Nidra

Day 1

Introduction

In Yoga Nidra we work with Sankalpa (intention or resolution). We enter and close the Yoga Nidra practice with our sankalpa. During these first 3 days, we will be using this restorative meditation practice. This is considered the “seed” of growth in the area of your life that is calling for attention.

Daily Prompt

Suggested meditation 15 minutes

Today is the last day of the introductory phase as we continue with this daily practice.

I invite you to stay with a 15-minute meditation practice. You can stick with the one you used yesterday, or come up with your own unique preference with a yoga nidra meditation practice.

Today your daily reflection will answer 4 questions about what’s stopping you.

These are the questions I want you to reflect on today.

1. What are the obvious external obstacles standing in the way of you achieving your creative vision?

2. What are the subtle external obstacles standing in the way of you achieving your creative vision?

3. What are the obvious internal obstacles standing in the way of you achieving your creative vision?

4. What are the subtle internal obstacles standing in the way of you achieving your creative vision?

There are a number of obstacles or barriers that we put in place that prevent us from achieving our goal. We will only be addressing two of them today: psychological and emotional

Let’s talk more about these barriers

Psychological Barriers

Psychological barriers result in absent-mindedness, the fear of expressing one’s ideas to others, or excitement and emotional instability. These are due to emotional limitations of being human beings. These limitations can affect your ability to send and receive messages. For example, when you are upset, you will have a hard time listening effectively to a message.

Some common forms of psychological barriers include:

False assumptions

Most of us will make an assumption about a situation or something that someone said and it’s usually wrong. It is important for us to clarify what is going on before we make those assumptions. Ask the questions or be clear in what you express to eliminate these falsehoods from either side.

Anger

Emotional state can pose a damaging barrier to communicating with others. However, it’s important to note that anger is also a great motivator for change, but we need to feel the emotion and release it so that an accurate message can come through.

Attitudes and Values

As we get older, we start to realize that some of the attitudes and values that we have pre-learned as a child are not necessarily accurate. When we start to shift from those beliefs and attitudes we have to adjust it, but that’s not always easy. If one of your beliefs is being threatened, you are likely to react emotionally instead of listening attentively to the message.

Negative Self-image

Negative self-image can affect us by not being forceful and lacking in conviction in the messages we receive. As a poor self-image or lacking self-confidence may have us in fear-based thoughts and we may begin to judge ourselves as not intelligent or worthy enough to understand the message.

Fear and Defensiveness

When we live in fear and defensiveness, we may try to justify the messages or even refuse to accept the message that is coming forward.

Implications and Inferences

An implication is a meaning derived through connotation rather than through specific details. An inference is a conclusion drawn from connotation rather than from specific details. As inferences go beyond the facts in making certain statements, they can give wrong signals. We interpret symbols on the basis of assumptions, which usually prove correct, but there is a probability that they may sometimes prove incorrect.

Abstracting

We use language to communicate our experiences and feelings, but we are less likely to communicate every detail because of the tendency to focus our attention on only some of the details. We abstract the selected information and present only the information which is relevant. The observations will not be perfect. Hence, communication would also be imperfect because our experience of the event is also not complete.

Close-mindedness, Overconfidence and Apathy

We are sometimes not prepared to receive new information on a subject about which we assume to know everything. Therefore our mind is closed to new ideas, facts and suggestions. When we are in this state of mind, we run the risk of showing overconfidence. These may cause you to be unwilling to learn new ideas. Whereas apathy causes interruption to effective listening.

Distortion, filtering and editing

Due to the manipulation of information, our messages are showing us what we want to see as results. Even when that outcome is not what we really would like to see.

Poor listening

Most people do not listen very well due to various distractions, emotions, excitement, indifference, aggressiveness and wandering attention.

Emotion

Emotions are our feelings about the world around us. Usually, positive emotions such as joy, love or affection do not interfere with communication; it is the negative emotions that create barriers.

Information overload

Whenever the information we have to work with exceeds our processing capacity, the result is an information overload. At this point we select, ignore, pass or even forget information.

Emotional Barriers

Emotional barriers are due to mental limitations created by one’s own self.

When we are under stress or in another emotional state, we are not able to see things as they otherwise would. We see and hear what we are emotionally tuned in to see and hear. For example, if we are perplexed, worried, excited, afraid, nervous or in a disturbed state of mind, our thinking will be blurred and the message will not be organized properly.
